African Commission | Alert to the 60th ordinary session

The 60th Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights will be held in Niamey, Niger from 8 - 15 and 22 May 2017. The African Commission session will be preceded by the NGO Forum and 34th African Human Rights Book Fair, which will take place from 4 - 6 May 2017.

NGO Forum

The focus of the 34th Book Fair and NGO Forum is ‘Engaging young people, especially women in human rights and democracy in Africa’. The central theme will be related to the implementation status of the African Youth Charter. The objective of the NGO Forum is to foster closer collaboration among NGOs and the African Commission for the purpose of promoting and protecting human rights in Africa, prior to the African Commission ordinary sessions.

Simultaneous translation from English to French will be provided.

60th African Commission session

Panel discussions and events scheduled for the ACHPR session:
  • Panel on Policing Assemblies and Launch of the Guidelines for the Policing of Assemblies by Law enforcement officials in Africa– Item 9, Wednesday 10 May 2017
  • Panel on Access to information , freedom of expression and privacy/data protection– Item 11, Thursday 11 May 2017
  • Event on Niger’s National Women’s Day – Item 16, Saturday 13 May 2017
State Periodic Reports

Mauritania is expected to be reviewed under Item 13 on 12 and 13 May. Commissioners will use the combined state periodic report which takes into the human rights situation in Mauritania from 2006 until 2014.
