ISHR joins CEJIL and over 100 civil society organisations in welcoming the decision taken at the Organisation of American States (OAS) to improve the financial stability, capacity, autonomy and independence of the Inter-American System for the protection of human rights.

Organisations and coalitions in the region, including the Coalition of Human Rights Organisations in the Americas, welcome the historic decision taken by the countries of the Americas to double the funds allocated to the Inter-American Human Rights System over the next three years.
The resolution was adopted by the Plenary of the General Assembly of the Organisation of American States (OAS), held in Cancun, Mexico, from the 19th to the 21st of June 2017.
By financing the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights through its regular fund, the OAS will make it easier for both institutions to operate in an environment of financial stability, and will support their capacity, autonomy and independence to respond to the challenges faced by all those of us who live on the continent. In addition, it means that the institutions will not have to depend on discretionary funds, or voluntary donations and contributions to carry out most of their work.
This proposal will therefore turn the OAS member states into the main financers of the organs of the Inter-American Human Rights System, thus confirming their genuine commitment to human rights.
We are on the verge of resolving the financial crisis that put at risk the IACHR’s capacity to promote and protect human rights.
The Inter-American System of Human Rights is our last resort in the situations of impunity, abuse of power, and other severe human rights violations that we are facing on our continent. We hope this will be first of many decisions to foster sustainable, long-term financing, contributing towards a solid and robust mechanism for the promotion and protection of our rights.
