UNGA74 | Bachelet urges States to step up defence of human rights values and system

Michelle Bachelet addressed the General Assembly for the second year in her capacity as High Commissioner for Human Rights on 15 October 2019. Following calls at last year’s interactive dialogue for the reinstatement of the High Commissioner’s yearly report for the General Assembly, this year Bachelet presented her latest report (A/74/36) before a packed Third Committee.

HRC38 | Critical situation of environmental defenders should serve as benchmark for diplomatic support

The UN Working Group on business and human rights, together with States, must consider the particular threats and attacks on defenders working on rights related to land and environment, ISHR and a group of environmental defenders told the Human Rights Council. ISHR also emphasised that States providing diplomatic support to business should also require a clear commitment to respect, consult and protect defenders.

ISHR and the National Coordinator for Human Rights exhort the Peruvian government to implement the necessary recommendations to protect human rights defenders.

HRC37 | 71 States fail to respond to allegations of rights abuses

In two statements, ISHR and Amnesty International have called on the President of the Human Rights Council to urge 71 States to respond to communications by UN experts regarding alleged human rights violations, and have raised the alarm regarding personal attacks on such experts.
