On the same day as a large group of UN independent human rights experts came together to clearly ring the alarm bell on the risk of genocide against the Palestinian people in Gaza, and the obligation of all States to take all necessary measures to prevent genocide, ISHR delivered a statement at a high-level briefing on the situation given by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Over 170 organisations demand that States that have provided and continue to provide arms and other forms of military assistance to Israel, adhere to their legal obligations and act resolutely and urgently to prevent Israel from perpetuating further international crimes and other serious violations of international law. This includes their obligations to prevent the commission of genocide.

As the UN Security Council and the UN General Assembly meet to discuss the human rights and humanitarian crisis in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories, particularly the Gaza Strip, ISHR makes eleven key calls to protect civilians and address root causes of the violence and conflict.

On 17 April 2023, ISHR submitted its annual submission to the report to the UN Secretary General on reprisals and intimidation against defenders engaging or seeking to engage with the UN and its human rights mechanisms.

During the General Debate on item 7, ISHR, the Community Action Center – Al-Quds University, Al-Haq, and Women Centre for Legal Aid and Counselling addressed the escalation of Israeli laws and policies of forcible transfer targeting Palestinians on both sides of the Green Line.

Over 150 organisations from all world regions demand that the international community condemns and takes action to protect seven Palestinian civil society organisations that have been subject to illegal threats, raids and closure by Israeli authorities

Following the designation of six Palestinian CSO as terrorist organisations, the international community must support and protect and ensure a safe and enabling environment for Palestinian civil society and HRDs.

Today, UN member States elected members to the UN's top human rights body, the Human Rights Council, for the 2022-2024 term. 18 candidates ran for 18 seats, and all were elected, leaving civil society disappointed in a process that can hardly be called an election.

10 years after the first SOGI resolution was passed at the Council, 27 States launch the Group of Friends of the mandate of the UN Independent Expert on protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. ISHR is appalled by the worsening acts of aggression and grave human rights violations in the occupied Palestinian territories - including East Jerusalem - as well as against Palestinian citizens across Israel. We call for an immediate ceasefire and for all people to enjoy the rights to freedom, dignity, equality and justice.
