HRC47 | KEY ISSUES ON AGENDA OF JUNE 2021 SESSION

The 47th session of the UN Human Rights Council, from 21 June to 15 July 2021, will consider issues including systemic racism, police brutality and violence against peaceful protesters, sexual orientation and gender identity, violence and discrimination against women and girls, poverty, peaceful assembly and association, and freedom of expression, among others. It will also present an opportunity to address human rights situations in States including China, the United States, Venezuela, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Colombia, Eritrea, Belarus and Syria, among many others. Here’s an overview of some of the key issues that are, or should be, on the agenda.

EGYPT | PRESIDENT SHOULD ACT TO UNSHACKLE FREEDOMS

ISHR joined 64 organisations from around the world to call on the Egyptian authorities, including President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, to take immediate action to end the Egyptian authorities’ wholesale crackdown on independent organisations and peaceful dissent.

CHINA | UYGHUR CAMP SURVIVOR REMINDS UN OF DUTY TO URGENTLY START REMOTE REPORTING

In an online discussion organised by ISHR and the World Uyghur Congress, Uyghur camp survivor Gülbahar Jalilova shared her story of long-term arbitrary detention. Her testimony echoes mounting evidence of human rights violations that call for systematic UN monitoring and public reporting.
ISHR is happy to provide advice to NGOs on preparing an application for consultative status with the UN and on navigating the procedures and political space of the NGO Committee.

In the wake of George Floyd’s murder on 25 May 2020 in the U.S., antiracism defenders and families of victims of police violence have been turning the tables at the UN on anti-Black racism and police brutality. In a new video, ISHR is highlighting the essential contributions of defenders and victims' families and paying tribute to Floyd and to all the victims of racially charged police violence.

TREATY BODIES | NGOs WELCOME DECISION OF UN ANTI-TORTURE COMMITTEE TO HOLD ONLINE REVIEW OF STATE PARTY

ISHR and NGO partners warmly welcome the UN Committee against Torture’s decision to host their first review of a State party since the beginning of the global pandemic, and the consideration of individual complaints which had also been suspended. With this decision, all UN Treaty Bodies have now taken steps to ensure the continuity of their mandate, including periodic reviews, which are crucial to State accountability.

COLOMBIA | STOP ATTACKS ON PROTESTERS, PROTECT DEFENDERS AND HOLD PERPETRATORS ACCOUNTABLE

With dozens of protesters killed and hundreds arbitrarily detained in Colombia in recent days, NGOs are calling on the Colombian government to take immediate action to guarantee people's right to protest, to hold accountable the perpetrators of the killings and attacks, and to take serious steps to address discontent, including through the implementation of the 2016 Peace Agreement.
