CHINA | GOVERNMENTS AND NGOS CALL FOR HIGH COMMISSIONER TO STEP UP WORK TO PROTECT UYGHURS

Following limited remarks last week, ISHR joined with more than 20 organisations to press the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet to initiate monitoring and reporting on the crisis targeting Uyghurs, as well as other key populations in China, especially in light of growing credible assessments of crimes against humanity. 


COLOMBIA | 300 NGOS URGE THE COUNCIL TO TAKE ACTION ON GRAVE HUMAN RIGHTS SITUATION IN COLOMBIA

More than 300 NGOs have called on the Human Rights Council to demand that Colombia respect the right to peaceful protest, investigate violations committed against protestors and defenders in recent weeks, and respond to protestors’ demands to deal with poverty, systemic racism, inequalities and impunity in the country.  

LGBTQI | FOUR KEY DEVELOPMENTS AT THE ONGOING COUNCIL'S SESSION

ISHR, along with 23 organisations, highlight attacks and targeting of trans and gender diverse defenders; the Independent Expert on SOGI examines the construction of gender in international law, a Group of Friends of the mandate of the Independent Expert is formed; and 27 States call on the Council to urgently protect the human rights of trans people.

ISHR is warning that phishing emails, camouflaged to appear as sent by an organisation called International Society for Human Rights and using the same acronym ISHR, are being disseminated with the goal of delivering malware and stealing information under the pretext of an invitation to an “International Human Right Conference on (Elimination Violence Against Women & Children, Human Trafficking and Child Abuse) Taking place from the 21st - 24th of JUNE 2021 in Massachusetts , Boston the United States and from the 27th - 30th of JUNE 2021 in Saint Louis, Senegal. 

RACIAL JUSTICE | LONG OVERDUE NEED TO CONFRONT LEGACIES OF SLAVERY, THE TRANSATLANTIC SLAVE TRADE AND COLONIALISM AND TO SEEK REPARATORY JUSTICE

ISHR, as part of a broad civil society coalition from the U.S., Latin America and the Caribbean, Europe, Africa, and international human rights organisations, is calling on the Human Rights Council to adopt a resolution that ensures effective accountability and follow-up to HRC Resolution 43/1 on systemic racism and police violence against Africans and people of African descent in the U.S. and globally.

CORPORATE ACCOUNTABILITY | ISHR WELCOMES NEW UN GUIDANCE ON BUSINESS AND HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDERS AND CALLS FOR ITS PRACTICAL IMPLEMENTATION

In an statement at the Human Rights Council, ISHR welcomed the UN Working Group’s recently released Guidance document for using the Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights for engaging with, safeguarding and ensuring respect for the rights of Human Rights Defenders. Human rights defenders are at the forefront of protecting their communities, the environment and key natural resources that maintain the balance in our planet.

"The rights of migrant workers are a global problem, and actors in different jurisdictions have to come together to make a difference in this particular area," says Barun Ghimire, a human rights lawyer based in Kathmandu, Nepal. "And we need to create a collective narrative that is based on a rights-based approach of migrant workers".
