A year after receiving an urgent call to action by 31 States at the Human Rights Council, Egypt has failed to end its persecution of activists, journalists and political opponents.

ISHR joins civil society groups in calling for international accountability, an end to impunity for sexual and gender-based violence, and an end to emergency laws in Sudan.

On Friday 11 March, Mary Lawlor, the Special Rapporteur on human rights defenders, presented a report to States at the Human Rights Council, focusing on the situation of anti-corruption HRDs around the world.

As UN experts and governments reiterated concerns over widespread violations across China, Michelle Bachelet announced an agreement in principle to visit the country. However, she failed to release a long-awaited report on violations, some amounting to crimes against humanity, in Xinjiang, the Uyghur region.

As the country’s human rights crisis worsens, States at the Human Rights Council must seize the opportunity to create a UN-mandated mechanism to investigate serious violations, identify perpetrators, and preserve the evidence.
