During the 77th session of the UN General Assembly and the meetings of the body's Third Committee, States discussed reprisals, the increasing barriers faced by defenders working to protect the rights of migrants and refugees, extrajudicial and arbitrary executions, and they posed no challenge to the renewal of the crucial mandate of the Independent Expert on protection against violence and discrimination based on SOGI.

JOINT CIVIL SOCIETY STATEMENT ON THE OUTCOMES OF UNGA77 THIRD COMMITTEE

Fifteen civil society organisations, including ISHR, marked the conclusion of the UN General Assembly's 77th Third Committee session with the following observations on thematic and country-specific resolutions considered by States. We urge governments to implement the commitments they made at this session to their full extent.

TREATY BODY CHAIRPERSONS EXPRESS FRUSTRATIONS OVER LACK OF RESOURCES, BACKLOGS

The Chairs of the ten human rights treaty bodies discussed the crucial issues they are facing and which are impacting their work, including insufficient financial and human resources and a significant backlog.

UN EXPERT: PROTECT LGBT COMMUNITIES, DEFENDERS WORKING ON ARMED CONFLICT

For the Independent Expert on protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, widespread discrimination, gaps in the international legal framework and data collection risks all increase violence against LGBT communities and defenders in conflict and post-conflict situations.

SUPPORT SOLIDARITY, COMPASSION TOWARDS MIGRANTS, ASYLUM-SEEKERS, REFUGEES

Speaking to the General Assembly's Third Committee, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders presented a report on activists working on the rights of migrants, asylum-seekers and refugees, which highlighted the administrative, legal, practical and societal barriers they face.

80 STATES JOIN CROSS-REGIONAL STATEMENT ON REPRISALS AT UNGA THIRD COMMITTEE

Ireland, on behalf of 80 countries, delivered a cross-regional statement condemning intimidation and reprisals against groups or individuals seeking to enage with the UN, and calling on States to report any cases, whether perpetrated by State or non-State actors, that occur within their borders.

UNGA THIRD COMMITTEE DISCUSSES ANNUAL SG REPORT ON REPRISALS FOR THE FIRST TIME

On 14 October, the General Assembly met to discuss the Secretary-General's annual report on reprisals. Until now, the report had only ever been discussed by the Human Rights Council and the Commission on Human Rights.

UN EXPERTS: PROTECT DEFENDERS ADDRESSING ENVIRONMENT, CLIMATE CRISES

At the UNGA Third Committee, two Special Rapporteurs emphasised the critical role of defenders in tackling the environment and climate crises and urged States and non-State actors to take measures to protect them.

MANDATE OF INDEPENDENT EXPERT ON SOGI RENEWED FOR A SECOND TIME, UNCHALLENGED

The UNGA Third Committee adopted the resolution presenting the Annual Report of the Human Rights Council without challenging the renewal of the mandate of the Independent Expert on protection against violence and discrimination on the basis of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI), for a second time.

RESOLUTION ON EXTRAJUDICIAL, ARBITRARY EXECUTIONS ADOPTED WITH REFERENCE TO SOGI

The Third Committee of the General Assembly adopted a resolution on Extrajudicial, Summary or Arbitrary Executions, which included strengthened language on human rights defenders and a reference to sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI).

UN EXPERT: PROTECT, RECOGNISE ROLE OF SOCIAL MOVEMENTS PROMOTING DEVELOPMENT, JUSTICE

Speaking at the UNGA Third Committee, the Special Rapporteur on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association underlined the role of social movements in creating inclusive societies and recommended measures to ensure an enabling environment for them.
