SUDAN: CALLING FOR A FACT FINDING MISSION

On 3 October 2023, a joint statement was delivered by ISHR on behalf of a group of Sudanese, regional and international organisations during the informal on the draft resolution 'Responding to the Human Rights and Humanitarian Crisis Caused by the Ongoing Armed Conflict in the Sudan'. The organisations called on States to support the establishment of an independent and international Fact Finding Mission on Sudan during the ongoing 54th Council session.

AFGHANISTAN: UN MUST SUPPORT CALLS TO END IMPUNITY AND GENDER APARTHEID

This week, the Human Rights Council will seek to adopt a resolution on the human rights situation in Afghanistan. The context in which this takes place is of deep financial, humanitarian and human rights crises in the country, but also of political negligence by the international community.

UN EXPERTS SAY STATES MUST ADDRESS STRUCTURAL CAUSES OF SYSTEMIC RACISM IN POLICING

UN experts presented States at the Human Rights Council with two reports looking at strategies to tackle racially-motivated violence in law enforcement. They recommended stricter and more transparent oversight frameworks for officials as well as greater use of community-led policing.

WORKING TOWARDS A MEANINGFUL, INCLUSIVE AND SAFE PARTICIPATION OF AFRICAN DESCENDANTS

On 5 October, State representatives, civil society organisations, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the Expert Mechanism to Advance Racial Justice and Equality in the Context of Law Enforcement (EMLER) came together to discuss the worldwide situation of racism against Africans and People of African Descent.

FIGHTING SYSTEMIC RACISM IN THE UNITED KINGDOM


At HRC54, INQUEST and ISHR delivered a joint statement highlighting State-related deaths of Africans and African descendants due to systemic racism in the United Kingdom, and calling for adequate investigation and resources for welfare, health, housing, education and social care.
 

HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDER STORY: DAVID YAMBIO FROM SOUTH SUDAN

David Yambio is a community advocate and spokesperson at the NGO Refugees in Libya. His own experiences of forced exile inspired him to fight for the human rights and well-being of migrants and refugees on both sides of the Mediterranean.

 

REPRISALS: WE DID IT! STATES RAISED SPECIFIC CASES DURING INTERACTIVE DIALOGUE

13 countries took a stance and cited specific cases and situations of reprisals and intimidation in ten different countries and territories, including cases ISHR has campaigned for, during the Interactive Dialogue on reprisals at the Human Rights Council’s 54th session.

REPRISALS: THE SECRETARY-GENERAL'S REPORT INCLUDES CASES FROM ISHR'S CAMPAIGN

On 19 September the Secretary-General’s report on reprisals was made public, including three of five cases ISHR has been actively campaigning for, namely the cases of Vanessa Mendoza (Andorra), Kadar Abdi Ibrahim (Djibouti) and the situation of civil society in Hong Kong.
