SPECIAL PROCEDURES | UN EXPERT URGES STATES TO RELEASE HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDERS

The Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders presented her report at the General Assembly's Third Committee on the long-term detention of human rights defenders.

REPRISALS | 80 STATES SPEAK OUT AT UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY

On 14 October, the UK delivered a cross-regional statement on behalf of 80 countries, condemning intimidation and reprisals, and calling on States to prioritise and support the meaningful participation of civil society at the UN. 
 

HRC | RESULTS SHOW NEED FOR COMPETITIVE ELECTIONS

UN member States elected members to the UN's top human rights body, the Human Rights Council, for the 2022-2024 term. 18 candidates ran for 18 seats, and all were elected, leaving civil society disappointed in a process that can hardly be called an election.

SPECIAL PROCEDURES | RIGHTS TO FREEDOM OF PEACEFUL ASSEMBLY & ASSOCIATION ESSENTIAL FOR CLIMATE JUSTICE

The Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Peaceful Assembly and of Association presented his report to the Third Committee of the General Assembly urging States and private sector to respect the exercise of human rights of those mobilising peacefully to address the climate crisis.

Sudanese human rights defender Abdulaziz Adam addresses the Human Rights Council to draw attention to the human rights situation in Sudan.
 

HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL | CIVIL SOCIETY PARTICIPATION NEEDS TO BE PRIORITISED

ISHR joined dozens of organisations in a joint letter addressed to the President of the UN Human Rights Council, Ambassador of Austria to the UN in Geneva, Director-General of the United Nations at Geneva, and all Members and Observers of the UN Human Rights Council.

AFRICAN COMMISSION | ALERT TO NGO FORUM AND 69TH SESSION

The 69th Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights will be held online, from 15 November to 5 December 2021. The African Commission session will be preceded by the NGO Forum, which will be held online on 10, 11 and 12 November 2021.

YEMEN | HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL'S FAILURE TO RENEW INVESTIGATION IS A WAKE UP CALL

ISHR joined 34 organisations to condemn and express their profound disappointment at the Human Rights Council’s decision to discontinue the mandate of the Group of Eminent Experts on Yemen, the only international and impartial body investigating serious violations and abuses of international human rights law and international humanitarian law perpetrated by all parties to the armed conflict in the country.

NICARAGUA | TIME FOR THE UN TO APPOINT EXPERTS TO INVESTIGATE HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS

After recent sham elections, NGO coalition 'Colectivo 46/2' calls on the United Nations to appoint experts to investigate gross human rights violations that have been taking place in Nicaragua since April 2018, and their root causes.

CHINA | CALL ON CHINA TO FREE DEFENDERS AND #REPEALRSDL

ISHR, Safeguard Defenders, The Rights Practice and The 29 Principles are mobilising the international community to put pressure on China to #RepealRSDL and end enforced disappearances against human rights defenders.
