A LOOK AT THE DEFENCE OF HUMAN RIGHTS IN LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN

UN VOICES UNANIMOUSLY CONDEMN HONG KONG'S NEW NATIONAL SECURITY LAW

Hong Kong's new national security legislation has sparked international concerns over its potential to further erode civil liberties and fundamental freedoms, and civil society engagement with the UN. ISHR calls for the repeal of this law and cease to interpret cooperation with UN bodies as a national security threat.

FRENCH GUIANA: INDIGENOUS KALI’NA PEOPLE APPEAL TO UN TO STOP POWER PLANT PROJECT ENCROACHING ON THEIR LAND

The Indigenous Kali'na community of the village of Prospérité has filed a request to the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination to activate an early warning procedure that would urge French authorities to halt construction of a power plant on land that is essential to their way of life. CALLING FOR VISIBILITY ON RACIAL DISCRIMINATION AND ANTI-BLACKNESS IN LATIN AMERICA

At a Human Rights Council general debate on racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related forms of intolerance, Racismo MX and ISHR delivered a joint statement on systemic racism and the invisibility of Afro-descendants and Indigenous peoples in Mexico. READ MORE >

BENELUX RAISING REPRISALS CASES IN THE GENERAL DEBATE

During the Item 5 General Debate, the States of Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg, BENELUX, raised individual cases of reprisals in a joint statement. We welcome their principled stance in publicly naming acts of reprisals against Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja from Bahrain, Li Qiaochu from China, Felix Maradiago from Nicaragua, and including cases ISHR campaigned for, namely Kadar Abdi Ibrahim from Djibouti and Viasna from Belarus.

HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDERS' STORY: SILA AND ESMA FROM GERMANY

Sila, a German college student, and Esma, a Uyghur from Frankfurt, co-founded the Uyghur Youth Initiative to advocate for Uyghur rights. Through protests, social media, and educational campaigns, they aim to raise awareness of the Uyghurs' plight and empower both Uyghur and allied youth in Germany. READ MORE >
