This month, we look at the Czech Republic's candidacy to fill the seat left vacant following Russia's suspension from the Human Rights Council. We call on Chinese authorities to release prominent human rights activist and lawyer Ding Jiaxi. We also list recommendations by the African Commission to prevent unconstitutional government changes. Finally, we showcase the story of Soun Yuthyia, who works to protect human rights in Cambodia.

HRC ELECTIONS FOR EASTERN EUROPEAN STATES VACANT SEAT

Following Russia's suspension from the Human Rights Council, the General Assembly will hold elections to fill their seat. ISHR has drawn up a scorecard for the Czech Republic, which declared its candidacy to join the Group of Eastern European States.

CAMPAIGN WIN | SUSPENSION OF RUSSIAN MEMBERSHIP OF THE HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL 

On 7 April, a two-thirds majority of States at the United Nations General Assembly voted in favour of suspending Russia's membership of the UN Human Rights Council.

NGO COMMITTEE | RUSSIA VOTED OUT FOR FIRST TIME IN 75 YEARS

On 13 April, States at the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) elected the members of the UN Committee on NGOs, a body frequently criticised for restricting civil society participation at the UN.

ACHPR71: RECOMMENDATIONS TO PREVENT UNCONSTITUTIONAL GOVERNMENT CHANGES IN AFRICA

Despite the African Union's adoption of the 'AGENDA 2063: "The Africa We Want"' in May 2013, 2021 and the beginning of 2022 have been marked by military coups in 5 African countries, with considerable impact on human rights, fundamental freedoms, democracy and governance. This needs to change.

CERD COMMITTEE REVIEWS CAMEROON'S RECORD ON RACIAL AND ETHNIC DISCRIMINATION

ISHR and the Cameroon Women's Peace Movement (CAWOPEM) submitted critical information and recommendations intended to better protect the Anglophone population and other ethnic minorities in Cameroon.

DEFENDERS IN NIGERIA STRATEGISE FOR BETTER PROTECTION OF THEIR RIGHTS

Nigerian civil society actors took part in a workshop co-organised by ISHR and Development Dynamics to discuss ways to reduce legislative restrictions that impair their work. They also sought to strengthen legal protections to safeguard and enable their activities.

BETTER PROTECTION NEEDED FOR INDIGENOUS PEOPLES, LAND AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEFENDERS

Despite their vital work, Indigenous peoples and land and environmental defenders continue to be attacked. New data shows alarming patterns of violence and harassment as preludes to lethal attacks against defenders.

SUDAN: END VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN PROTESTERS AND ENSURE ACCOUNTABILITY

ISHR joins civil society organisations in calling on Sudan to end the attacks against Sudanese women protestors and WHRDs, following the military coup.

CIVIL SOCIETY VOICES DEMANDS AHEAD OF BACHELET'S VISIT TO CHINA 

High Commissioner Michelle Bachelet must ensure her announced UN visit is credible, unfettered and meaningful, and that it is preceded by the prompt release of the much-awaited OHCHR report on serious violations in Xinjiang, the Uyghur region.

REPRISALS: IN SUBMISSION TO UN, ISHR DOCUMENTS CASES OF REPRISALS IN 20 COUNTRIES

For the international human rights system to function, defenders must be able to freely share crucial information and perspectives. However, many defenders still face unacceptable risks and cannot safely engage with the UN.

Ding Jiaxi is a prominent Chinese human rights activist and lawyer. Since 2010, he has been working tirelessly to promote and protect the rights of his fellow citizens facing injustices. For this, the Chinese government has tried many times to silence him.
