LATEST UN REVIEW DISPLAYS CHINA'S DISREGARD FOR HUMAN RIGHTS AND UN FINDINGS

At the adoption of the report of its fourth Universal Periodic Review (UPR), China ignored calls to implement UN findings and dismissed all serious criticism of its human rights record, refusing to budge on the documented plight of Uyghurs, Tibetans, Hong Kongers, human rights activists, lawyers, and more. We urged China to genuinely engage with the UN to enact meaningful reforms.

UN EXPERT CONCERNED ABOUT RESTRICTIONS TO FREEDOMS FOR LGBT PEOPLE

Graeme Reid presented his first report as Independent Expert on violence and discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity, to the 56th session of the Human Rights Council. He expressed concern about laws and policies restricting freedoms of expression, peaceful assembly and association that target people based on sexual orientation and gender identity in all regions. READ MORE >

DEFENDERS PLAY CRUCIAL ROLE IN PROTECTING THE RIGHTS OF THE INTERNALLY DISPLACED

Upon presenting her report on displacement and climate change at the 56th session of the Human Rights Council, the Special Rapporteur on Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) encouraged Member States to integrate human rights and support for defenders in efforts to tackle the needs of IDPs. READ MORE >

VENEZUELA: UN WARNS AGAINST SHRINKING CIVIC SPACE IN FINAL UPDATE BEFORE ELECTIONS

On 4 July, Volker Türk presented his office’s report on the situation in Venezuela to the Human Rights Council, giving States a key opportunity to publicly hold the Maduro government accountable for their record ahead of a likely tense presidential election, later this month. READ MORE >

CALLING FOR THE END OF THE CRACKDOWN ON FUNDAMENTAL FREEDOMS IN ALGERIA

Mouloud Boumghar spoke at the Human Rights Council's interactive dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on freedom of peaceful assembly and of association, addressing the crackdown on fundamental freedoms by the Algerian authorities and called them to repeal repressive laws.

SUDAN: PROTECT LIVES, STOP DEATH SENTENCES AND EXECUTIONS OF CIVILIANS

Civil society calls on the international community to protect civilians and to urge fighting parties to respect their obligations under international humanitarian law. This includes ending all forms of targeting of civilians on the basis of ethnic or political affiliations. Civil society further calls for fair trials and an end to the death penalty in Sudan. READ MORE >

DEFENDERS AND STATES EXCHANGE EXPERIENCES ON PROTECTION MECHANISMS

Between 9 and 11 July 2024, ISHR together with Colombian partners Asosciaciación Minga, the Colombian Commission of Jurists and the Somos Defensores Program organised a cross regional discussion on protection mechanisms for human rights defenders. READ MORE >

UAE MUST RELEASE DEFENDERS AND POLITICAL DISSIDENTS

In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the convictions of at least 44 defendants at a mass trial of at least 84 human rights defenders and dissidents were based on a fundamentally unfair process, a coalition of human rights groups said today. READ MORE >
NGO COMMITTEE: POLITICS WEAKEN PROMISING REFORM

In this 2024 resumed session of the ECOSOC Committee on NGOs, a reform decision led by members the United Kingdom and Costa Rica was weakened amidst ongoing politicisation by members as well as the UN’s inability to support the Committee to fulfil its mandate.
