16 organisations share reflections on the key outcomes of the 50th session of the UN Human Rights Council, as well as the missed opportunities to address key issues and situations. 

AFGHAN WOMEN CALL FOR STRONGER ACTION BY THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY

International community urged by Afghan women to “move from beautiful words and statements, to practice” as the Human Rights Council adopts resolution on the situation of women and girls in Afghanistan.

STATES AND HUMAN RIGHTS ORGANISATIONS URGE THE UN TO CONTINUE FOCUS ON VENEZUELA

The UN must continue its multi-pronged approach on Venezuela, civil society organisations and States urged during a week that saw a review of the implementation of recommendations made by the High Commissioner for Human Rights to Venezuela and the adoption of the Universal Periodic Review's Third Cycle report on the country.

SUDAN: JUSTICE AND COOPERATION MECHANISMS MUST BE IMPLEMENTED TO ENSURE A PEACEFUL TRANSITION

Sudan presented its report in the third cycle of the Universal Periodic Review. ISHR delivered a joint statement on behalf of MENA Women Human Rights Defenders Coalition, Sudan Women Rights Action and Nora Center for Combating Sexual Violence, urging Sudan to implement effective measures to guarantee the rights of protesters, women human rights defenders and the rights of women and girls.

UN RENEWS CRUCIAL HUMAN RIGHTS EXPERT MANDATE ON SEXUAL ORIENTATION AND GENDER IDENTITY

Following a sustained advocacy campaign by over 1000 civil society organisations from 134 States and Territories, the UN Human Rights Council once again reaffirms its commitment to combating discrimination and violence on the grounds of SOGI, and reminds all States of their obligations towards LGBT and gender-diverse people.

TOGO MUST TAKE CONCRETE STEPS TO ENSURE THE PROTECTION OF CIVIL SOCIETY AND DEFENDERS

At the 50th session of the Human Rights Council, Togo underwent its 3rd Universal Periodic Review. While the government showed a willingness to promote some of the rights necessary to enable the work of human rights defenders, large structural and legal efforts are still needed to improve the situation overall.

UGANDA MUST BETTER PROTECT WOMEN DEFENDERS AND LGBTIQ+ PERSONS 

On 1 July 2022, during the 50th session of the Human Rights Council, Uganda presented the outcome of its 3rd Universal Periodic Review. Only 54% of the recommendations given for review were accepted by Uganda and none of them were related to the protection of human rights defenders. Uganda can and should do better!

BURUNDI MUST COOPERATE WITH THE SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR

Following the adoption of resolution 48/16, a mandate of UN Special Rapporteur on Burundi was established. During its 49th session, the Human Rights Council appointed Fortuné Gaetan Zongo as the mandate holder. On 29 June 2022, he presented his first oral update during the 50th session of the Council.

LEGAL PERSECUTION OF CIVIL SOCIETY DENOUNCED IN DEBATE ON NICARAGUA

Nicaragua is once again a key topic of concern on the agenda of the 50th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. The newly-appointed ‘Group of Experts’ created by the Council in March begins its investigation of serious human rights violations in the country, as international condemnation remains strong.

BEFORE ENDING TERM, HIGH COMMISSIONER URGED TO SET RECORD STRAIGHT ON CHINA'S HUMAN RIGHTS CRISIS

As High Commissioner Bachelet announces end of term amidst sharp criticism of her visit to China, a growing number of governments and NGOs call for the presentation of her Xinjiang report. Meanwhile, over 40 UN experts issue strong call for an international inquiry into China’s human rights crisis, an effort restoring some credibility to the UN’s Human Rights Office with human rights defenders.

ZIMBABWE MUST IMPLEMENT RECOMMENDATIONS ON DEFENDERS AND CIVIC SPACE

Since its last Universal Periodic Review, Zimbabwe’s human rights situation has greatly deteriorated. The country must urgently implement recommendations on defenders and civic space.

ISHR SUPPORTS LAUNCH OF UN GUIDANCE ON ENSURING RESPECT FOR HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDERS

The UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights published its Guidance on Ensuring Respect for Human Rights Defenders unpacking the practical implications for businesses and States in protecting and respecting the work of human rights defenders.

CALL TO HOLD TRANSPARENT, MERIT-BASED, CONSULTATIVE PROCESS TO PICK NEXT HIGH COMMISSIONER

In an open letter to the UN Secretary-General, NGOs insist that the post of High Commissioner should be filled by someone of high moral standing and personal integrity, and who is independent and impartial and possesses competency and expertise in the field of human rights.

FOUR COMPLAINTS FILED AGAINST MOROCCO BEFORE THE UN COMMITTEE AGAINST TORTURE

Morocco is responsible for a series of acts amounting to torture against four peaceful defenders of the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination, the petitioners allege.

NGO COMMITTEE:  ATTEMPTED VOTE TO GRANT 5 NGOS CONSULTATIVE STATUS DEFEATED 

The ECOSOC Committee on NGOs has adopted its report bringing the first session of 2022 to a close. The session saw heated exchanges around a vote to accredit 5 deferred NGOs a well as serious consequences of under-resourcing of the NGO Branch.

INTER-AMERICAN COURT TO DECIDE ON STATE PERSECUTION AND SURVEILLANCE AGAINST DEFENDERS

Closing arguments were presented in a case that offers a historic opportunity for the Inter-American Court of Human Rights to rule on attacks, illegal surveillance and the use of technology against human rights defenders.

In advance of the Human Rights Council elections that will take place this autumn for the membership term 2023-2025, Amnesty International and the International Service for Human Rights will hold an online pledging event for candidate States on 7 September 2022.
