Holding businesses to account on civic freedoms and the respect of human rights defenders

Join us to discuss developments in regard to business and human rights defenders as well as recent initiatives to both encourage better practice and hold businesses to account. By invitation only.

Location: Geneva, Switzerland
Date:

Last year, despite and because of their vital work for the benefit of all people, at least 177 land and environmental human rights defenders were killed for protecting the planet, according to Global Witness.

Those with clear responsibilities to protect human rights defenders and promote civic freedoms include businesses. This event is aimed at providing an overview of efforts to articulate those business responsibilities and at looking in detail at a few recent initiatives, including the work of the UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights, and that of the International Service for Human Rights (ISHR) and the Business and Human Rights Resource Centre (BHRRC). During the event we will speak to the challenges in encouraging better business practice and the need and opportunities to hold businesses to account.

Speakers:

  • Fernanda Hopenhaym, UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights
  • Bennett Freeman, advocate for responsible business and investment
  • Prarthana Rao, FORUM-ASIA
  • Ana Zbona, Business and Human Rights Resource Centre

Moderator: Ulises Quero, International Service for Human Rights
