The situation of Nicaraguan activists in exile

This event seeks to analyse challenges faced by Nicaraguan activists who find themselves in exile and reflect on possible responses by protection mechanisms, the universal human rights system, and States.

Location: Geneva, Switzerland
Date:

For nearly six years, the government of Nicaragua has engaged in a pattern of repression and human rights violations - some of which have been branded ‘crimes against humanity’ by UN experts. Authorities have also expelled real or perceived critics from the country, including defenders, grassroots organisers, and religious figures.

In February 2023, Managua released 222 political prisoners, stripped them of their nationality and forced them to go into exile. That same year, 220 priests and nuns were banished or prevented from entering the country. Exile and the loss their citizenship have left many in situations of vulnerability.

This event will seek to analyse challenges faced by former political prisoners who find themselves in exile and reflect on possible responses by protection mechanisms, the universal human rights system, and States.

Speakers:

  • Keyla Chow Mendez, Bloque Costa Rica Nicaragüense en el Exilio
  • Juan Sebastián Chamorro, former political prisoner from Nicaragua
  • Alberto Brunori, representative from the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Panama
  • Video statement from an expert from the Group of Human Rights Experts on Nicaragua (GHREN)
  • Representatives of the States composing the Core Group on Nicaragua (opening and closing remarks)

This side event will be available in both English and Spanish with interpretation provided.

This side event is co-organised by the Permanent Missions of Argentina, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Paraguay, Ecuador, Centre for Civil and Political Rights, Peace Brigades International, International Institute on Race, Equality and Human Rights, and International Service for Human Rights.
