Nicaragua: Between prison, exile, and transnational repression
This UNGA80 side event seeks to make visible the continuing repression in Nicaragua, to give a voice to victims and affected communities, and to strengthen avenues for international protection and accountability.

Nicaragua is experiencing a serious and sustained human rights crisis, driven by a State policy of systematic repression against human rights defenders, real and perceived dissidents, Indigenous Peoples and Afro-descendants. This crisis is entrenched in legal and constitutional reforms that reinforced an authoritarian power.
This UNGA80 side event seeks to make visible the continuing repression in Nicaragua, to give a voice to victims and affected communities, and to strengthen avenues for international protection and accountability, with a particular focus on transnational repression, the closure of civic space, political persecution, and the situation of Indigenous Peoples and Afro-descendants.
