Human rights defender's story: Alexandra Salazar from Nicaragua

Alexandra Salazar is a human rights defender from Nicaragua, working for the organisation Unidad de Defensa Jurídica (UDJ), which has been supporting political prisoners in the country since 2018.

Alexandra told ISHR what inspired her to pursue the defence of human rights and what her hopes and aspirations for Nicaragua are, particularly now that the Nicaraguan government has accentuated its crackdown on critical voices and civil society groups.

Alexandra recently spoke before the Human Rights Council, at its 52nd session, urging States to renew a resolution that established the Group of Experts on Human Rights in Nicaragua (GHREN), granting them and the OHCHR a monitoring and reporting mandate on the situation in the country.

For Alexandra, it is urgent that this mandate is renewed for a period of two years so that those responsible for what the GHREN has described as ‘crimes against humanity’ are brought to justice in Nicaragua.
