In a ground-breaking initiative, civil society organisations worldwide have united to produce an authoritative articulation of the international legal framework for the protection of human rights defenders.

ISHR is pleased to launch its latest research exploring the extent to which national human rights institutions could act as national protection mechanisms as part of the implementation of national human rights defender protection laws in selected West African countries.

An authoritative set of new principles on international human rights law relating to sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and sex characteristics (SOGIESC) —released today by a group of 33 international human rights experts—charts a way forward for the UN, governments, and other stakeholders to re-affirm their commitment to universal human rights.

Developed in consultation with over 500 defenders from every region, and settled and adopted by 28 of the world’s leading human rights experts and jurists, the Model Law provides authoritative guidance to States on how to implement the UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders at the national level. It also provides an influential new tool for civil society to promote, evaluate and report on implementation.

The Yogyakarta Principles on the Application of Human Rights Law in relation to Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity were developed by a group of 29 international human rights experts following an experts’ meeting held in Yogyakarta, Indonesia from 6 to 9 November 2006.
