ISHR is delighted to announce the appointment of Michael H. Posner, the founder of Human Rights First and former US Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor, to its Board.
(Geneva) – The International Service for Human Rights is delighted to announce the appointment of Michael H. Posner to its Board.
‘ISHR is very pleased to have Mike Posner join the organisation in a non-executive leadership role,’ said ISHR Director Phil Lynch.
‘Mike brings almost 40 years experience as a human rights defender and a globally renowned expertise on issues of human rights, NGO management, international relations and government affairs.’
Mr Posner is a Professor of Business and Society at NYU’s Stern School of Business and Co-Director of the NYU Center for Business and Human Rights.
From 2009 to 2013, Posner served as the top human rights diplomat of the United States in his role as Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor. In this capacity he championed issues including freedom of expression and association, internet freedom, LGBT rights, the protection of civil society space, and the promotion of democracy and the rule of law.
Before being confirmed as Asssistant Secretary of State, Posner worked for 31 years as Executive Director and then President of Human Rights First, a leading non-governmental organisation devoted to to advancing universal rights in the US and around the world. He has also worked as a lawyer and a lecturer at both Yale and Columbia Law Schools.
Posner’s appointment further strenghens ISHR after leading international human rights advocates Hina Jilani, Sir Nicolas Bratza, Egbert Myjer and Jean-Daniel Vigny joined the Board in 2013.
