Human rights defender's story: Emiliano Vergara, from Mexico

'With everything happening around the world, the international community may be stretched thin, but it’s very important to look at places that may not have as much public visibility.'

Emiliano Vergara is a lawyer, human rights defender and a participant to ISHR’s flagship training course, the Human Rights Defender Advocacy Programme (HRDAP). In an interview, he told us he hopes that the international community does not lose sight of the plight and experiences of people facing crises in remote regions that may not always be at the centre of international debates.

He also emphasised the importance of establishing clear rules that can govern the human rights and environmental impacts of corporations, particularly in a region like Latin America, where environmental human rights defenders face grave threats.

Emiliano was among the 16 human rights defenders who took part in the 2024 edition of ISHR’s HRDAP training programme.
