Human rights defender's story: Olga Valle from Nicaragua

Olga Valle is a human rights defender and activist from Nicaragua who works for the citizens’ electoral watchdog Urnas Abiertas.

Olga Valle spoke to ISHR and discussed what drove her to act in the defence of human rights and particularly the civil and political rights of her compatriots, despite running immense personal risks in doing so.

In March 2023, Olga came to Geneva to speak before the Human Rights Council during its 52nd session. She urged States to renew resolution 49/3, passed in 2022, and which that established a monitoring and reporting mechanism to investigate grave human rights violations in Nicaragua.

States will vote on a proposed 2-year renewal of this mechanism in the closing days of the Council’s 52nd session.
