Human rights defender's story: Cris Cats, from Nicaragua

'They can take our homes, our titles or our surnames, but the hope and joy that sustain us, and with which we continue to work, still remain.'

Cris Cats is a Nicaraguan human rights defender and the coordinator of a feminist collective. She has known State repression and exile but, to this day, maintains faith that ‘the sun will rise’ again on a society where ‘little girls can go to school on their own and return home alive’ in Nicaragua.

Cris spoke before UN Human Rights Council in December 2023, warning States and the High Commissioner of the dire situation faced by defenders in Nicaragua. These courageous activists, she said, face a terrible choice, as a result of their work: prison or exile.
