In October 2023, Sila and Esma were among eight activists working who participated in ISHR’s United Nations Advocacy Training (UNAT) programme to learn and strategise together on ways to hold the Chinese government accountable for its human rights violations at the international level.
Human rights defenders' story: Sila and Esma from Germany
Sila, a German college student, and Esma, an Uyghur from Frankfurt, co-founded the Uyghur Youth Initiative to advocate for Uyghur rights. Through protests, social media, and educational campaigns, they aim to raise awareness of the Uyghurs' plight and empower both Uyghur and allied youth in Germany.
Sila and Esma have turned their personal experiences into a powerful movement for change with the Uyghur Youth Initiative. They organise campaigns, poetry slams, and workshops to connect with their heritage and fight for human rights against oppression by the Chinese government.
Despite risks, including surveillance by Chinese authorities, their determination remains unwavering. They urge global awareness and action, emphasising the issue’s human essence beyond ethnic or religious identities. Through their efforts, they inspire hope for a future where Uyghur families can live freely and reunited and everyone can practice their religion and culture without barriers.
